Remembering Bill Evans

14/03/2022

I had the great fortune to play a tribute to Bill Evans gig with Hamish Houston (bs) and the irrepressible Oz Jazz treasure Ted Vining (dr) at the end of Feb. Surely there are few jazz pianists in the entire world who have not been influenced by Bill Evans, whether through his work directly or through others who were influenced by him - Herbie, Chick, Keith, Brad, Eliane, Fred (Hersch), John (Taylor), Lynne (Arriale), Renee (Rosnes) .... the list would be pretty well endless.

We played a few of the many standards he covered in his inimitable way, but it was a great thrill to play Time Remembered, Turn Out the Stars, How my Heart Sings, Waltz for Debby, Elsa - tunes that BELONG to Bill. I learned so much - over many years - working on these and others, they are dear to my musical heart!
